What a Hoot: Seymour Owl JAG Family Partners with DC Think Tank to better their community

Writer: JAG IndianaJAG Indiana

The city of Seymour will have a chance to make a national impact soon, as it was chosen as one of three Indiana communities participating in a study hosted by the well-known Washington D.C. research think tank, Brookings Institute, and students from the SHS JAG Family are right in the center of it all.

JAG students (in order from left to right in photo above) Britney Zuniga, Faithe Petty, Raven Rutherford, Macey Davidson and Ruth Diego (not pictured) are working with Brookings to give a youth input on living and economic conditions in Seymour.

Seymour, along with Warsaw and Michigan City, are part of this national study that partners Brookings with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). The town was chosen through the Indiana Economic Development Corporation due to the curriculum and workforce initiatives within the schools, the local adult education population and, specifically to Seymour, the rising Hispanic population.

The study is working to create an action plan to ensure economic opportunity and stability for residents and workers in Seymour, who are giving their input about what they like, do not like and how it could be made easier for residents to have jobs and healthy lives and families.

The study is a 12-month process with an advisory council that meets monthly. The goal is to have the study wrapped up by the end of summer with an action playbook presented in the fall recommending a 3-year plan. JAG students are part of a focus group that includes the Mayor's Youth Council that is meeting with the Brookings team from a young adult perspective. SHS JAG Specialist Celeste Bowman will also meet with the Brookings team. JAG Indiana is proud of the SHS family for working to give their input to have impact not only on their community, but at a broader scope, across the state and even nationally.
