On February 16, Whiteland Community High School JAG’s Genesis Lilly will represent her school in their annual Career Development Conference as their Outstanding Senior. But her rise to be one of the faces of her JAG program didn’t happen overnight.

As was the case with so many students, COVID rendered Genesis feeling isolated and in a shell. But three years later, she’s blossomed into the leader she is through taking in all of Elizabeth Moffett’s JAG program has to offer.

“The things she’s been working on the last few years, they’re really going to set her up to do some special things,” said Elizabeth, WHS’ long-time JAG Specialist.

Genesis echoes the lesson’s she’s learned in JAG that have allowed her to stretch her leadership wings and break out of her shell.

“I think JAG has really shown me how to be compassionate about other people,” mused Genesis. “I think that through the community service that we've been doing the past couple of years, I think that JAG has showed me that I can help other people, not just myself.”

So much has Gensis caught the “service for others” bug, that she’s planning to make a career of it. She says that after graduating from WCHS in the spring, she will be plotting a career as a social studies teacher.

“JAG has shown me different types of career paths that I could do, and what I could envision myself doing,” she said.

Elizabeth, for her part, predicts success for this once shy student turned leader.

“She values other people’s input, and you know this will translate really well to being in the classroom as a career, because you want to have a collaborative environment. She definitely allows her fellow (Career Association) officers to have a voice, and that’s really important. I’m excited to see what she’ll accomplish.”

Added Genesis, “at the end of the day, we’re all in this together. (Because of JAG) I realized that I should be more compassionate about other people and go along with my day with the goal of helping others.”
